A critical part of protecting your PC, no user should run their computer without a quality anti-virus product.

My recommendation is AVG Anti-Virus.  It works very well and does not hog system resources like some other anti-virus programs do.  And the best part is that it's free.

Are you eligible to use AVG?

There are a few warnings that you must heed if you plan on using AVG:

  • You can only install AVG free on personal computers.  They offer an affordable paid version you can use for your computers at work or for your business.
  • The free version lacks some features found in the paid version such as the ability to get the latest virus definition updates quicker.

Where do you get it?

The company that makes AVG is called Grisoft.  Their website is www.grisoft.com.  Please be aware that you may need to do a bit of hunting when you get there as the free version seems to be hidden behind the paid version.

This Anti Virus Program has actullay become very popular over the past few years and have made major improvements to thier detection technology.  I still recommend AVG first, but if you are in a bind you may want to try this software out!

Avast! Pesonal Edition

About Avast!

Avast is a very good product, and it's detection rates are comprable to most major anti-Virus products.  Avast has been around since the eraly 90's but hasn;t really become known in North America until the last few years.  One intersting theing about this product is if you type in www.antivir.com in your web browser, you will actually be redirected to the Avast website!  I ahve not been able to draw a relation ship between the two companies so far, but if I find anything out I will let you all know.

Totally Free Spyware Removal Programs

AdAware

About AdAware

AdAware does a great job of detecting and removing spyware, malware and adware that is currently active in your system.  Because of this I always recommend running AdAware before you run Spybot.

Where can I get Adaware?

You can visit AdAware's website at http://www.lavasoft.com/ to download and install the latest version.  They are always updating their spyware definitions so make sure you stay on top of updating AdAware each time you use it.

There is also a paid version of AdAware that will monitor your computer in real time to prevent spyware and malware from making changes to your system, however, I personally do not like this feature as it has caused many problems when it comes time to use the system configuration utility to clean your computer.

Spybot Search And Destroy

About Spybot

Spybot is completely free and does very similar tasks that AdAware does plus more.  I have found spybot to be less effective in removing real-time threats from your computer than AdAware is, but I've found it to be much better at completely removing all traces of spyware and malware that it detects when the threats are not active.  This is why I recommend running AdAware first - let AdAware deal with the real time threats and let spybot sweep up the leftovers.

Microsoft AntiSpyware BETA

About Microsoft AntiSpyware BETA

Microsoft AntiSpyware BETA was originally created by a company called Giant AntiSpyware.  It includes a very useful feature called SpyNet that allows the software to report new variants of spyware quickly as they are released to ensure the developers can write new removal instructiong for the newest variants of spyware.

It is uncertain of whether Microsoft AntiSpyware BETA will remain free for much longer, but at the time of publishing it was still free.  The only downside to this product is that it is always monitoring activities in your system which slows you computer down considerably - a small price to pay if you are contantly being infected by spyware.

CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It deletes  unused and unnecessary files from your system and frees up disk space and makes Windows run faster.

It cleans files that contain information about your online activities such as your Internet history and cookies.  It is fast and free.  I recommended that you run it at least once a day.  It does not run all the time in the background and hinder the perfomance of your PC.
